Description

The BMC Timemachine TM01 with Shimano Ultegra 6800 moves through the wind like a hot knife through butter.

The Timemachine TM01 is engineered speed. It is also UCI-compliant, so aspiring racers have a tool that delivers all the goods when they step up to the international level. Comfort is important when time trialing. Many think it's about tucking into an uncomfortable position and grinding away. BMC considered the rider when designing the bike, so it is neither stiff like a board nor flexy like a noodle. It provides plenty of stiffness for translating power to the pedals, but thanks to tube shaping, offers some give for comfort. Keeping this in mind, they spec'd a Fizik Tritone Manganese saddle, a noseless tri' specific saddle that boasts long rails and a rear end that can be utilized for attaching gear and bottles. The bike also comes equipped with 25mm tires, which offer increased air volume, and that volume means both better grip and better rolling over imperfect road surfaces.

BMC created Position 2 Perform (P2P), a sizing system that takes in both their Tri-Angle Concept stem module and their 21-21 seat post. The stem has 30 positions it can be adjusted to. Plenty of options for figuring out where you're fast and comfy, and once it's dialed, it's a breeze to take apart for travel and reinstall on the other side. The seat post clamp can be shifted from 21mm behind the bottom bracket axis to 21mm in front of it. While these terms seem heavy in marketing-speak, they tell you something important. Regardless of your body dimensions or flexibility, this is a time trial bike that will fit.

Ultegra 6800 a group that hits the sweet spot of price and performance. The paradigm-changing crankset is light and stiff and the bar-end shifting is about as reliable as a shifting system can be. The left lever is traditional friction while the right lever has ten clicks for eleven-speed goodness. The gearing is 53/39 and 11-25, which is plenty big and wide for most courses. The brakes are specific to this BMC frame and run internally: marginal gains add up in time trials.

The component package is rounded out with smart selections. The base bar is Profile's Ozero, a hydroformed aluminum wing finished with T2+ S-bend extensions. The extensions give you the hands-down skier-tuck position. The wheels are Shimano's WH-RS11 wheels. These moderate-dish aluminum wheels offer very low spoke count, 16 in the front and 20 in the back, which is an important drag saving trick. The rim is also 24mm deep, which is deep enough for a little aero benefit without adding weight. With the aluminum rim you get an aluminum braking surface that are proven to work in all weather. The tires, Continental Ultra Sport 2, are 25mm wide for comfort, and have a folding bead, for light weight.

Since all framesets are, in a sense, a temporary home for components, know that the frame possesses BMC's Dual Transmission Integration, so if you ever desire to switch to electronic shifting, you can just by changing the stops and installing an internal battery. Likewise, know that the bottom bracket standard is BB30, so if you want a narrower, more aero crank, you can install it.

The BMC Timemachine TM01 with Shimano Ultegra 6800 is designed with a top chassis and workhorse parts.
